This is a political drama set in Italy in the 1930s. It explaores the psychology of a weak-willed man who gets drawn into the covert criminality of the fascist regime. This established the reputation of director Bernardo Bertolucci, who also wrote the screenplay from a Moravia’s novel. It stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Stefania Sandrelli. Complex, stylish, and visually gorgeous, it has been highly influential on other filmmakers of the ensuing decade. A beautiful and disturbing film.
