Inaugural CUWAS Whisky Tasting

The CU Whisky Appreciation Society has now been founded. Their inaugural Whisky tasting takes place on 29th May, 7.30PM, at Darwin College. A message from the President follows.

“Hi All,

I am pleased to announce the first ever tasting of the new CU Whisky Appreciation Society. This has been long awaited as to date, from some strange reason unknown to us, there has been no specialist society just for whisky.

This tasting will be held at 1 Newnham Terrace (part of Darwin College) from 7:30pm on the 29th May. Ticket prices will be £12 per head, for which you’ll get to try six great whiskies.

Who am I and what is this all about?

My name is Marc Etherington and I am the outgoing treasurer at Clare MCR (http://mcr.clare.cam.ac.uk/). Over the course of the year I have helped rebuild the MCR whisky collection to a powerhouse of Single Malts and International Whiskies. Now that my term is over I have decided to lend my hand to a pastime close to my heart-The appreciation of whisky.

Along with a few friends and colleagues predominantly the whisky enthusiasts over at Darwin Bar (www.facebook.com/darwincollegebar/), whose extensive collection of whiskies keeps us on our toes at Clare, I have decided to start up a university wide whisky appreciation society, hence CUWAS.

Our first tasting will be quite small and is there to attract both beginners and experienced whisky connoisseurs. It is mainly for anybody who would like to have an active role in the initial foundation of this society, but don’t feel that participation will be followed by responsibility.

The hosts for the evening will be Cambridge Wine Merchants (http://www.cambridgewine.com/), a joint founder in this adventure into the world of whisky. The ticket price will include a taste of 6 whiskies but also automatic entry into a raffle to win one of four free places on a trip to visit the English Whisky Co. in Norfolk (http://www.englishwhisky.co.uk/), this will include a free tour and lunch at the venue.

The tasting is limited to 28 places only, and will be on a first come first served basis. Please reply to me at mke23@cam.ac.uk.

Future tastings and potential membership fees and benefits will be announced on the evening. I am hoping that we will get some discussion over the direction the society should take.

But in the meantime Sláinte Mhath and hope to see you there.”
