Film Sunday: “Bringing Up Baby” (1938)

From director Howard Hawks, this is one of the classic screw-ball comedies. The story concerns a palaeontologist and a woman with a pet leopard (“baby.”) The dogged pursuit of knowledge is compared unfavourably to the simple embrace of fun. Only modestly successful on its release, it is now regarded as one of the great comedies of Golden Age Hollywood. It stars Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn.
