PhD Dinner on Tuesday 13 May

Dear Hughes Hall PhD students

Every year Hughes Hall hosts a dinner for PhD students and their supervisors, and for 2014 it will be on Tuesday 13 May. This is our way of thanking them for the work they do on behalf of the college, and an opportunity for college fellows to get to know them. It is also a good chance for you to meet students and supervisors in other fields, and to share a pleasant dinner and evening together.

The dinner is free to you and your supervisor. It is open to all PhD students, across all years and regardless of whether you have attended before or not. Please don’t feel that it’s too early in your first year, or too late in your final year, or that it somehow doesn’t apply to you. We would very much like as many as possible to attend with their supervisors, until the Dining Hall is full.

So please consider inviting your supervisor. (Note that this should be your main/senior supervisor, not their post-doc assistant.) As soon as they indicate their acceptance, inform our Tutorial Secretary (tutorial[at]hughes.cam.ac.uk) noting any dietary requirements. We will then reserve places for you both, and formally invite your supervisor on behalf of the college. We look forward to a very good evening together.

Please do this soon rather than leave it till later, since many academics fill their diaries well in advance, and please reply at the latest by Monday 28th April.

While I’m writing, let me remind you that the college allows PhD students to host their research group (15 max) at a Formal Hall, see www.hughes.cam.ac.uk/current-students/college-facilities/dining/ under Guests. You must contact me directly (psj10) to arrange this. Remember that we have the constraints of only one or two Formal Halls a week, and need to arrange for other groups like Formal swaps. Dates book up quickly, so the more advance notice you can give, the more likely we can find a suitable date.

Best wishes, Philip
