Film: “Russian Ark” (2002)

This film follows a small group of visitors to the Winter Palace at the Hermitage. It becomes an exploration of Russian history, as the various rooms present people and themes from various historical episodes, not always chronologically. The walking tour becomes a dream-like panorama. The film is shot from the perspective of its narrator. More remarkably, the filming of this complex narrative was achieved entirely in a single take. It may be the first feature-length film to achieve this. Written and directed by Alexander Sokurov.
