Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra Conducting Competition

I am pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra (CUSO) Conducting Competition!

This is open to current undergraduate or postgraduate students.

Applications will close on Monday 16th January 2017 at 23:59 GMT.

Round 1 will be held on the afternoon of Monday 23rd January. For this, we will ask you to conduct two pianists in the final movement of Brahms’ Symphony No. 1. We will ask you to treat this like a performance and conduct the entire movement from start to finish.

Round 2 will be held on Monday 23rd January from 7.30pm to 10.20pm. Six finalists will be asked to rehearse the Cambridge University Symphony Orchestra for twenty minutes. You will be expected to choose a movement (or part thereof) from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1, which the orchestra performed in their Michaelmas concert.

Orchestral scores will not be provided for either round; you will be expected to bring your own. We will have a conductor’s stand available should you require it.

The successful finalist will be expected to attend several rehearsals during Lent term 2017 to ease the transition, and will take up the role proper from Easter term 2017, with first performance that term. He/She/They will be expected to then remain with the orchestra for at least academic year 2017/18, preferably longer.

In order to apply, please read very carefully the following.

Please submit your curriculum vitae and a cover letter to cuso-auditions@srcf.ucam.org by the closing date/time. Ensure that your full name, college, CRSId, mobile telephone number and primary instrument(s) (if applicable) are included in this information. We will endeavour to acknowledge your application within 48 hours; if this does not happen, please email Zack Millar (CUSO President) at zam22@cam.ac.uk to follow it up.

We look forward to receiving your application!
