Jordan Corbett (He/Him)

President

mcr.president@hughes.cam.ac.uk

BA Geography, Year 2

What are some aspirations and hopes you have for the Hughes Hall MCR this year?

For me, we need to rebuild the community atmosphere from day one next year and encourage a social and laid back community in Hughes. I also want to make the concept of the MCR to be more inclusive and represent the unique community Hughes Hall has.

What inspires you to be in the Hughes Hall MCR?

Ultimately, there was a fantastic opportunity to rebuild and reshape the college after the COVID lockdowns. I wanted to be a part of that reshaping process. I feel like I have the ideas to ensure that the college is reshaped in the best way it can possibly be.

As I row, the boat club dinner was memorable. It was the first event where we could relax and socialise with a great group of people.

As well as being MCR Pres, I am the captain of the Hughes Hall Mixed Netball team, playing as a silky and agile Goal Attack in one of the most social teams in college – feel free to email me if you wish to join!

Brendan Low Shern Leong (He/Him)

Vice President (External)

mcr.vp.external@hughes.cam.ac.uk

BA Law, Year 3

What are some aspirations and hopes you have for the Hughes Hall MCR this year?

To create a community that is welcoming and open to people of various backgrounds and upbringings, and hopefully to foster relations that turn into lifelong friendships!
To support the student body as we go through the various challenges and stresses of university, which we all know extends to more than just academic matters!
To seek values that are right and true for the community, building one another up.

What inspires you to be in the Hughes Hall MCR?

I believe that service to others is a crucial way in finding our own callings in life. As I serve my committee members as well as the student body, I know I might just leave an impact, even if just a tiny one, and that I believe is fulfilling. I also enjoyed the random chats I have with the members of Hughes Hall, all having an interesting perspective, shaped by the various upbringings we all been through together, and that is especially so for my committee members who I spend the most time with obviously. Every conversation is a time to grow and I love that!

Name your most memorable moment in Hughes so far!

Definitely late night chats at the MCR bar, in a pre-Covid time and maybe a post-Covid one!
Talking to the porters about the troubles of life have always been encouraging, some of them have really cheered me up in those bleak midwinters!

What inspires you to be in the Hughes Hall MCR?

Hughes Hall MCR has a reputation for being one of the most active student-run bodies. Previous Presidents have done great things to make sure students had an absolutely amazing time at Hughes. All of this has inspired me to join!

What are some aspirations and hopes you have for the Hughes Hall MCR this year?

For the coming year, I hope to improve the administrative efficiency of the MCR, reduce bureaucracy, as well as to increase the amount of outreach to the student population, shaping the MCR into a proactive and enthusiastic committee.

What inspires you to be in the Hughes Hall MCR?

During my first year in Hughes Hall, I feel that I am not being actively engaged in the Hughes population (partly due to the onslaught of the pandemic), and I hope to use this opportunity to both expand my horizons and to build a more cohesive Hughes community.

I hope that we can help bring a social life and sense of community back to Hughes after the past difficult year. Patrick and I want to run lots of social events throughout the year, and continue on the success we had last term with our weekly sip and paint and Sunday Chill events.

What inspires you to be in the Hughes Hall MCR?

I’ve really enjoyed my first year at Hughes and wanted to be more involved in college life during my second year. As an undergraduate I also wanted to make sure that the views of undergrads are heard as we are the minority at Hughes!

Name your most memorable moment in Hughes so far!

I think my most memorable moment at Hughes was when we held our first Thursday sip and paint – it was one of the first big social events that were allowed post-lockdown and it was so much fun to be able to bring the whole college together again.

mcr.welfare.female.nonbinary@hughes.cam.ac.uk

BA Biological Anthropology, Year 2

What are some aspirations and hopes you have for the Hughes Hall MCR this year?

It’s been an extremely difficult year for us all! Therefore, I’d like to put student welfare and mental health first. This means creating a supportive community with the resources, events and determination to support students to both continue their studies but also thrive at Hughes Hall.

What inspires you to be in the Hughes Hall MCR?

My own journey to university was a turbulent one, struggling with disability/chronic illness related issues and coming from a background where no other family member had attended university. Inclusivity and access are incredibly important to me – and I’d like to make Hughes Hall a space that reflects that.

I hope, as a committee, we make Hughes a more inclusive place than ever. To present effective ways for students to engage with environmental activism and charity work through mediums that are tailored for the students of Hughes Hall, as well as apply pressure on the college as an institution to adopt more ethical practices.

What inspires you to be in the Hughes Hall MCR?

I think that anyone can make a difference, but when a lot of people get together they can make a far greater difference. It’s important that there is someone in the MCR who can facilitate students engagement with ethical ideals on a practical level and help students make an impact far beyond what any of us could achieve independently.
